Many of these figures had been part of the revolutionary left of the s and s. Portantiero and De pola for example belonged to the partisan left in the years before the dictatorship and were prominent promoters of Marxism in the country. In particular they spread Gramscian Marxism through a fundamental magazine of leftwing intellectuals Pasado y Presente directed by Jos Aric. belonged to the Argentine Communist Party and was a disciple of Hctor Agosti Secretary of Culture and key intellectual figure of that party. On the eve of the coup both Aric Portantiero and De pola took refuge in Mexico.
There the three along with other exiled intellectuals promoted the Russia Mobile Number List of Controversia the most important magazine produced by the Argentine exile. From the pages of Controversia they began to rethink their affiliation to the revolutionary ideas that had defined their trajectories until that moment. They then questioned the ideological messianism of a left that had thought of all relationships in terms of class struggle and that privileged the ends over the means to achieve them.
This selfcriticism also implied a condemnation of the methods of violence that had been common currency in the revolutionary left even when these intellectuals had not themselves resorted to weapons. Perhaps the most emblematic text of this selfcriticism was the one with which Controversia opened its first issue where the editors maintained that the left had suffered an atrocious defeat that was a product not only ... of the superiority of the enemy but of our inability to value it of the overvaluation of our forces of our way of understanding the country of our conception of politics.. The evaluation of the actions of the left was devastating so only a profound renewal of its political identity could take place in the new historical context. This new identity began to be delineated more openly with the beginning of democracy. While the exiled intellectuals returned to Argentina others emerged from the semiclandestinity to which the repression had thrown them.
